General information for visiting and sightseeing in Castel National Park
Castel battles
Fierce battles and heroic stories involve the Battle of domination that took place on the spot. In 1948, on the top of this hill was an Arabic post. This position is WEAK on the way to Jerusalem and threatened to cut off the city from the rest of the settlements in the country. In March 1948, after three convoys that immigrated to Jerusalem were attacked and damaged, a decision was made to conquer the Castel at any cost. Three times the Castel immediately moved to hand.

The first operation for the conquest of the Castel was carried out in combination with the troops of the infantry and the Palmach unit. The soldiers were chosen to cover and the Palmach Warriors were chosen to conquer the hill. The Warriors climbed the hill. It quickly became clear to the surprise of the Warriors that the Arabs abandoned the hill. Castle Hill was captured without a fight. After the troops settled on Castel Hill, the Palmach left. There are only about 70 soldiers left in Castel. Among the remaining fighters were novices and inexperienced newcomers. Some did not even know how to speak Hebrew and some were anonymous.

On April 3, 1948, a counterattack of the Arabs began to reoccupy the Castel. The Arabs emerged from two directions. The battles were fierce and bitter. The fighters of the Infantry suffered many losses and barely held on. During the battles, there were few reinforcements from Jerusalem. But the Warriors in Castel continued to fall and get hurt. In parallel with the bitter battles on the Castel, one convoy managed to pass along the road and reached Jerusalem. It was a bright spot and happiness for the tired Warriors.

The night after the battle is very exhausting. The night was rainy and cold, the fighters were tired from lack of sleep. Their food was scarce and the ammunition was scarce. Many wounded and wounded lay helplessly. The decisive turn in the conquest of the Castel began on April 8, 1948. In the hours of the morning. The shelling stopped and became quiet. Then, at dawn, three figures rose to the hill. Initially, the fighters thought they were Israeli reinforcements. However, they quickly turned out to be Arabic-speaking. And immediately they were shot by Meir Carmel and killed on the spot. Only later did it turn out that one of the dead was the leader of the Arab troops in the Jerusalem region during the war of independence. It was a well-known Jewish predictor. Mr. enemy to the Jews, Abdel Qadar al Husseini!

After the fact of Abdel Qadar al-Husseini's death was published, 'Pesa' was declared throughout the Jerusalem area and the lowlands. Several hours later, tens of thousands of Arabs gathered from the whole region. Arabs also came from Ramallah and even from Hebron and Ramala. The Arabs stormed furiously. In cries, shouting, with every corrupting tool the God had the reach to obtain, a knife, an ax, or a rifle. They boarded and attacked the Castel defenders.

The remaining warriors on the hill fought with despair and last forces, after five days of previous consecutive battles and with a minority of ammunition. With the aggravation of the battles against the Furious Arab mob, and with about 30 surviving fighters, an order was received to withdraw from the Castel. At that time, Simeon Halsey, a member of the 3 Battalion of the Palmach, announced the immortal announcement that was engraved: "the privates will retreat and the commanders will be overlapped from behind." This order has become an IDF symbol for its generations. After the withdrawal of troops, the Arabs abandoned the Castel and went to the funeral of their commander, Al-Husseini. And the Castel again abandoned Arabs.

Following this, a new IDF command came out: "the Castel must be recaptured. The whole country listens and hopes." Skillful force set out to conquer the hill in a short battle. And since then, the Castel has remained in our hands.
